It is a collegiate research university located in Oxford, England, and it is known as the University of Oxford. The university has a record of teaching since 1096, thus making it the most ancient in the English-speaking world and the oldest operating institution worldwide after the University of Bologna. It was fast growing since 1167, when king Henry II barred English students from going to the University of Paris. When fighting broke out between students and Oxford townsfolk, some scholars left for Cambirdge and founded a school which became the University of Cambridge. Two ancient English universities have several similarities that is why they are often combined and called Oxbridge.
